Masterson keeps 'living the dream'

There are moments when Justin Masterson takes a walk through the Red Sox's clubhouse and he literally can't take the smile off his face. It isn't simply that Masterson is pitching so well. It's just the fact that he is living this life of a Major Leaguer earlier than even he could have imagined.

Red Sox probable pitcher

Justin Masterson

  • RHP
  • (3-1) 2.90 ERA
Red Sox: In his last start, the right-hander suffered his first loss in the Majors -- but had one of his best outings. He set new career bests in innings (6 2/3) and strikeouts (nine) while walking three. Masterson was undone by the home run ball, giving up long balls to Jay Bruce on a slider and Adam Dunn on a sinker. This could be Masterson's last start if Daisuke Matsuzaka is cleared to return from a mild strain of his right rotator cuff.

Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell have been at the top of manager Charlie Manuel's batting order in 20 of the team's past 22 games. The Phillies are 14-6 in those contests.

Phillies probable pitcher

Kyle Kendrick

  • RHP
  • (6-2) 4.54 ERA
Phillies: Kendrick turned in a workmanlike performance while receiving staggering run support in his last outing. The right-hander went seven innings and allowed just two runs (one earned) in a 20-2 win. Kendrick's ability to focus with a big cushion was pleasing to manager Charlie Manuel. The Phils are 10-1 in Kendrick's last 11 starts and 11-4 overall in his starts. Kendrick got through seven innings on 94 pitches and allowed just one walk and eight hits.

Sox seal series win

Jeered every time he went to the plate, J.D. Drew silenced the Phillies fans by going 4-for-5 with a three-run homer and four RBIs. Mike Lowell also went deep to help Justin Masterson (five innings, two runs) pick up his fourth win in six starts.

Kendrick off his game

Reliable righty Kyle Kendrick was anything but in the series finale, giving up six runs over three innings, and the Phillies could not come all the way back. Pedro Feliz collected two RBIs, while Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth each drove in a run.
