Peavy to make Yankee Stadium debut

Nearly six years to the day after making his Major League debut against the Yankees, Padres pitcher Jake Peavy will make his first and only start Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. "I'm excited to pitch at Yankee Stadium," Peavy said.

Padres: In his first start back since being sidelined for nearly a month, Peavy tossed six scoreless innings in a 9-0 victory on June 12. The defending National League Cy Young Award winner struck out four and did not walk a single batter in his first game since May 14. He went on the disabled list with a sprained right elbow on May 20. Peavy needed only 72 pitches to get through six innings and generally felt good about the outing. This will be Peavy's first career start at Yankee Stadium.

Starting pitcher Darrell Rasner joked to a reporter Tuesday night when his last start was mentioned. "Yeah, thanks for bringing that up," Rasner said. It was brought up because the last time Rasner took the mound was the last time the Yankees lost a game, that being an 8-4 loss at Oakland on June 11.

Yankees: Arguably the Yankees' best starter of the first half so far, along with Mike Mussina, Rasner was soundly rapped for the first time this year on Wednesday, allowing six consecutive hits at one point in the third inning of an abbreviated start at Oakland. Rasner allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings as the A's kept taking him the opposite way, never allowing the righty to establish command of his four-seamer. Rasner has lost his last four decisions after winning his first three.

Peavy stumbles

Jake Peavy lasted just four innings, allowing four runs on six hits to put the Padres in an early hole. Brian Giles and Adrian Gonzalez hit back-to-back homers in the seventh, and Chase Headley connected on his first big league homer in the eighth, but it wasn't enough.
