Sonnanstine excited to return to Miami

Andy Sonnanstine has only pitched at Dolphin Stadium once, but it was definitely a memorable experience for the right-hander. It was there that he won his first Major League game and got his first Major League hits.

Rays: Sonnanstine picked up his team-leading eighth win of the season Wednesday night against the Cubs, after allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings plus one batter. The right-hander is a master of deception, employing an array of pitches that he can throw from all different angles. But he is at his best when he uses his fastball to set up the other pitches. Sonnanstine will be facing the Marlins for the second time this season, as the 25-year-old picked up a win against the Fish on June 13. In that contest at Tropicana Field, Sonnanstine tossed five 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits.

It is payback time for the Marlins when they return home from a nine-game road trip to host their in-state rivals, the Tampa Bay Rays. Florida is 1-2 vs. Tampa Bay this season but 35-23 against it overall in Interleague Play.

Marlins probable pitcher

Scott Olsen

  • LHP
  • (4-4) 3.51 ERA
Marlins: After coming out winless in Seattle in his last start, Olsen remains without a victory since he beat Milwaukee on May 6. Not that the lefty has pitched poorly over that stretch, but he was knocked around a bit by the Mariners. In 4 1/3 innings, he surrendered five runs (four earned) on 11 hits. The outing was his shortest in five starts. Typically, he goes at least five innings. He had a string of three consecutive six-plus innings starts snapped.

Rays rally for win

The Rays scored two times in the top of the eighth inning on bases-loaded walks by Dioner Navarro and Eric Hinske to take the lead on Tuesday. Akinori Iwamura hit his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the top of the third inning to supply early offense for the Rays.

Fish falter late

A quality outing by Scott Olsen turned into another no-decision after the Marlins' bullpen allowed two runs in the eighth and two in the ninth. Olsen, along with Jeremy Hermida and Jorge Cantu, recorded an RBI in the series-opening loss to the Rays at Dolphin Stadium.
