Miguel Batista will be back to the starter's role on Wednesday in place of Erik Bedard, who suffered from back spasms during his Friday start in Atlanta.
Mariners probable pitcher
Miguel Batista
- #43 RHP
- (3-9) 6.26 ERA
Mariners: Take the "interim" tag from in front of closer and replace it with "former" for Batista. With R.A. Dickey pitching two innings on Sunday, the veteran right-hander will be moved back into the starting rotation, where he is 3-7, with a 6.16 ERA, actually a run and a half lower than his ERA as a reliever. The 37-year-old Batista is pitching to a 4.93 ERA on the road this season, but is 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA in nine career games at Shea Stadium. He is 4-3 lifetime against the Mets, with a 3.67 ERA.

So the Mets' strategy from the plate to the basepaths must change, because there are only so many ways Jerry Manuel can manipulate his lineup. Philosophically, the Mets manager said he needs to feel a symbiotic relationship between each hitter in the order.
Mets probable pitcher
John Maine
- #33 RHP
- (7-5) 3.78 ERA
Mets: The first two batters to face Maine last Friday in Denver scored, and his outing looked ominous. But Maine recovered from those early struggles -- not to mention a quickly-escalating pitch count -- to last 6 2/3 innings against the Rockies. He retired seven straight at one point, striking out six in total and tying Johan Santana for the team lead with seven wins. Maine has never faced the Mariners.

Wright on time, Mets break out of funk (28-50) (38-39)
Mets 8, Mariners 2
Back in the rotation after a three-week stint in the bullpen, Miguel Batista allowed eight runs -- on three homers -- before leaving after 2 2/3 innings, putting the Mariners in a deep hole. Willie Bloomquist's RBI single and Ichiro Suzuki's sacrifice fly in the fifth accounted for Seattle's lone runs.

After taking his first day off of the season on Tuesday, a refreshed David Wright hit a solo homer in the first and a two-run shot in the second to help the Mets salvage the finale. Jose Reyes hit a three-run homer in the third, providing plenty of support for John Maine's eighth win.
