TV: SNY | Radio: WFAN 660, WADO 1280 2:05 pm ET Yankee Stadium TV: MY9 | Radio: WCBS 880, WNSW 1430
This weekend's four-game series with the Yankees represents four opportunities to crawl back into playoff contention, four games to reduce the Phillies' lead in the National League East, four wins away from changing an entire season's outlook.

Mets probable pitcher

Mike Pelfrey

  • #34 RHP
  • (4-6) 4.30 ERA
Mets: Pelfrey walked five batters last Sunday at Coors Field, but managed to pitch out of multiple jams and blank the Rockies over 5 2/3 innings. He was inefficient but effective, throwing 98 pitches and allowing three hits. Pelfrey will start the first half of Friday's doubleheader against the Yankees. He has never faced the Yankees in his career.

The first time the Yankees and Mets suited up to play two games in two New York stadiums on the same day, it was a historic novelty, creating a fresh and unique experience for even the most traveled of big leaguers.

Yankees probable pitcher

Dan Giese

  • #38 RHP
  • (1-2) 0.64 ERA
Yankees: Giese threw an impressive 6 2/3 innings in his Major League starting debut against the Reds on Saturday. The right-hander recorded outs quickly and avoided long at-bats, throwing only 75 total pitches. Of those 75 tosses, 53 were strikes. Giese was tagged for three unearned runs to pick up the tough-luck loss. He gave up just four hits and struck out five with no walks. The righty's one mistake was a throwing error to second that blew a double-play opportunity. Giese retired 20 of the 25 hitters he faced in his first big league start.

'Car' sends Mets right way on Subway (39-39) (42-37)

Delgado delivers

Carlos Delgado drove in a team-record nine runs, breaking the game open with a grand slam and a three-run homer. Delgado had help, as Luis Castillo scored five times, while David Wright and Carlos Beltran had three RBIs apiece to send the Mets to Shea with a shot at a twin bill sweep.

Hurlers hampered

Dan Giese's second career start didn't go as well as his first, allowing six runs in four-plus frames. The 'pen didn't fare much better, with Ross Ohlendorf giving up a grand slam. Alex Rodriguez hit his 15th homer, but it wasn't enough for the Yanks in the home half of a split-stadium twin bill.
