Road warrior Marquis set to face Giants

Jason Marquis doesn't know why, but he seems unaffected by the Cubs' difficulties on the road. His road ERA (3.51) is almost three runs lower than his mark at home (6.29). His career numbers don't follow the current trend, but he's not about to complain.

Cubs: The Orioles made sure Marquis wouldn't go 5-0 for June his last time out, shelling him for seven runs in four innings. He had been stellar previously, outdueling Brad Penny, Roy Halladay and Jose Contreras in consecutive outings. The start was Marquis' shortest of the season and his first loss since May 13. Marquis is 3-0 with a 2.56 lifetime against the Giants.

Cain poised to give Giants 100-K trio

If Matt Cain strikes out three Cubs batters Tuesday night, the Giants will have three starting pitchers with 100 or more K's before the All-Star break for the first time in the San Francisco era.

Giants probable pitcher

Matt Cain

  • #18 RHP
  • (4-6) 4.44 ERA
Giants: Cain struggled in his last outing, allowing four runs and eight hits in five innings at Cleveland. That interrupted a three-game stretch in which he was 2-1 with a 2.95 ERA, 25 strikeouts and only three walks in 21 1/3 innings. Cain's appearances against the Cubs conjure an indelible memory: On Sept. 9, 2005, he became the youngest Giant in the franchise's San Francisco history to throw a complete game when he beat Chicago with a two-hitter. Cain finished 1-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts against the Cubs last year.

Century Cain (50-34) (37-47)

Giants 2, Cubs 1

Cubs fall to Giants

Jason Marquis was the victim of little run support on Tuesday night, as the Cubs' offense spent the first eight innings floundering against Giants starter Matt Cain. Despite collecting only five hits, the Cubs managed to leave 16 men on base in the loss in San Francisco.

Cain stifles Cubs

Matt Cain had a stellar night against one of the top teams in the Majors as he struck out 10, including his 100th of the year, and didn't allow a run through eight innings. Fred Lewis paced the offense, notching two of the Giants' five hits and scoring both times he reached base.
