Mendoza, Rangers to oppose Ponson

A month ago, Sidney Ponson seemed locked into the Rangers rotation, and Luis Mendoza seemed stuck in Triple-A trying to get healthy again. Now they'll face each other in a big league game, and Ponson is the one pitching for the other team.

Rangers: Since returning from the disabled list on June 20, Mendoza has done everything asked of him out of the bullpen and then some. In his last three appearances, he's thrown eight innings of shutout baseball. He earned a save in his first outing and a victory in the second. His last time out, he retired three of the four Phillies batters he faced. Since coming off the DL, Mendoza has six strikeouts compared to four hits allowed and no walks. Wednesday will mark Mendoza's first start against the Yankees and the Rangers' final regular-season game at Yankee Stadium.

Ponson to face former club in Rangers

Right-hander Sidney Ponson already faced a challenge as part of the Yankees' pitching staff. In his 2008 New York debut, Ponson took the mound in the second game of Friday's split-site doubleheader against the Mets, hours after a 15-6 Yankees' loss.

Yankees: How's this for symmetry? Ponson's next probable turn would come against the Rangers, the same club that unceremoniously released him after off-the-field incidents made the organization question his desire. The Yankees would have little reason to not keep Ponson in the rotation after the right-hander hurled six innings of scoreless, five-hit ball against the Mets on Friday at Shea Stadium. Ponson walked four and struck out four in the outing.

Yanks use nine-spot to rout Rangers (44-42) (45-40)

Yankees 18, Rangers 7

Bullpen roughed up

Milton Bradley and Chris Davis each belted two-run homers in the sixth inning to erase an early three-run deficit, but the Rangers bullpen allowed nine runs in the seventh inning, and Texas was unable to complete the sweep in New York.
