Eager Johnson ready for activation

All that has kept Reed Johnson from returning to the lineup is the pesky rulebook. The outfielder was sent to the disabled list with back problems in mid-June, but he's felt fine for several days. In the finale of a four-day set in San Francisco, he'll finally be activated.

Cubs probable pitcher

Sean Gallagher

  • #36 RHP
  • (3-3) 4.36 ERA
Cubs: Gallagher did not get a decision in his last outing against the White Sox, but learned some valuable lessons. The right-hander gave up five runs on eight hits and three walks over six innings, and matched a season high with eight strikeouts. He also threw a season-high 121 pitches. He got an earful from Lou Piniella in the second inning, and settled down. He escaped a tough jam in the fifth when the Sox had two on and one out, and struck out the next two batters. He's still going through growing pains.

After getting most of Wednesday's game off, Bengie Molina is expected to return to his normal post as starting catcher when the Giants conclude their series against the Cubs. Molina's on pace to start 130 games behind the plate, which would be a career high.

Giants probable pitcher

Tim Lincecum

  • #55 RHP
  • (9-1) 2.38 ERA
Giants: After one of his worst starts of the year against Kansas City, Lincecum had his best game of the season in his last outing, against the cross-bay Aʼs. In seven innings, Lincecum allowed no runs on five hits. He tied a season high with 11 strikeouts and threw strikes on 77 of his 116 pitches. It was his third double-digit strikeout game of the year.

Lincecum makes it six straight (51-35) (38-48)

Giants 8, Cubs 3

Two and two

The Cubs' hopes for road series win were dashed when Sean Gallagher gave up four runs in the second inning, and setup man Carlos Marmol surrendered a three-run homer in the seventh.

Ten for ace

Tim Lincecum wasn't dominant, but his quality start was enough for him to earn his 10th win of the season. Veteran Rich Aurilia put the game away with a three-run, pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning.
