Braves head West seeking fortune

With their margin for error minimal, the Braves boarded their charter plane on Sunday night in need of a good West Coast road trip, one that can keep them in the National League East race before they adjourn for the four-day All-Star break.

Braves probable pitcher

Jorge Campillo

  • #57 RHP
  • (3-3) 2.99 ERA
Braves: Campillo uncharacteristically struggled with his control on Wednesday night and paid the price against a talented Phillies lineup. Whenever he falls behind, the right-hander's varied repertoire of pitches becomes limited. This was the second time the Phillies had seen him as a starter and his fourth appearance against them. The Dodgers haven't seen the 29-year-old rookie hurler this season. But there might be some reason to wonder if the National League will have better success against him when they get their second looks later this year.

Dodgers probable pitcher

Hiroki Kuroda

  • #18 RHP
  • (4-6) 3.73 ERA
Dodgers: Three weeks on the disabled list did the trick for Hiroki Kuroda, who returned with seven scoreless innings against the Astros and showed no signs of the right shoulder tendinitis that sidelined him. He scattered five hits, walked only one and threw an efficient 83 pitches, with his fastball clocked around 94 mph.

Braves go quietly

A 17-inning game followed by a cross-country flight may have taken its toll as the Braves started their West Coast road trip with their first 21 batters being retired before Mark Teixeira hit a double to lead off the eighth inning. Jorge Campillo took the loss despite a quality start.

Kuroda hurls gem

Hiroki Kuroda came within two innings of tossing a perfect game, keeping the Braves off the bases until the eighth. He settled for a one-hit shutout and got all the support he needed from Nomar Garciaparra's two-run homer as the Dodgers pulled into a tie for first in the National League West.
