NY Mets (52-44) at Cincinnati (46-51)

"Now we're even again," Billy Wagner said on Thursday after the Mets' come-from behind victory over the Reds had afforded them a share of first place in the National League East. "And now that we're equal, we have to show them that ... we're the better team."

Mets probable pitcher

John Maine

  • #33 RHP
  • (8-6) 3.99 ERA 93 SO
Mets: Maine's left forearm didn't cramp up as it did in Philadelphia, but his stat line from Thursday' start against the Giants was most definitely cramped: 4 2/3 innings, two hits, three earned runs, five walks, two wild pitches and eight strikeouts. All together, it was a lot of everything for a short outing turned no-decision, including a workload of 109 pitches (63 of which were strikes). In his last three starts, Maine has averaged slightly more than 4 2/3 innings and has not escaped the sixth inning. He hasn't fared much better against the Reds, either, sporting a 10 ERA with a 0-2 record in nine career innings.

Rested Burton ready to return to action

Jared Burton is expected to make his return to the mound on Friday after sitting out several games with a strained lat muscle on his right side.

Reds probable pitcher

Bronson Arroyo

  • #61 RHP
  • (7-7) 5.97 ERA 93 SO
Reds: Riding a three-game winning streak -- his longest of the season -- Arroyo has seemingly recovered from a rough couple of starts in mid-June. He gave up five runs on seven hits through five innings against the Cubs on July 10, but got credit for the win. In his only start against the Mets this season, Arroyo pitched eight strong innings, giving up just one run on four hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. He reached his highest pitch count of the season -- 115 -- in that start. The eight innings were also his longest of the season.

Arroyo makes Mets see Red (52-45) (47-51)

Reds 5, Mets 2

Streak derailed

A pair of runs courtesy of Carlos Beltran and Damion Easley in the fourth seemed like it would be enough for the John Maine. But the wheels came off in the fifth inning for the right-hander, giving the Reds what they needed to make the Mets' 10-game win streak screech to a halt.

Five alive

With Bronson Arroyo holding the Mets to four hits, the Reds needed just one inning -- the fifth -- to put the game away. Tacking four runs on to the one Jay Bruce provided with his solo shot in the third gave Arroyo the cushion necessary for his fourth straight win.
