Heilman in awe of Pelfrey's turnaround

When the 24-year-old Mike Pelfrey faces the Reds' Edinson Volquez, a 25-year-old All-Star, on Sunday, he'll have an opportunity to gauge himself against the best of his generation. And Aaron Heilman, a former first-round Draft pick like Pelfrey, thinks his teammate will handle the duel just fine.

Mets: Pelfrey continued his abrupt about-face the day before the All-Star break against the Rockies, gaining his sixth victory in six starts. Pelfrey has started four of the team's six shutouts. He pitched eight innings Sunday, extending his scoreless innings streak -- it spans three starts -- to 16. He has allowed one run in his three most recent starts (22 innings). He allowed six hits, and for the second straight start -- and the second time in his career -- he walked none. He hit a batter and struck out five. His start was moved up two days because Pedro Martinez's start had to be postponed two days.

Votto taking time to work on defense

While Reds manager Dusty Baker isn't too worried about Votto and thinks he has made a lot of progress, the young first baseman will have a chance to prove himself on Sunday vs. the Mets.
