NY Mets (52-46) at Cincinnati (48-51)

TV: CW11 | Radio: WFAN 660, WADO 1280 1:15 pm ET Great American Ball Park TV: FSN-HD | Radio: WLW 700
When the 24-year-old Mike Pelfrey faces the Reds' Edinson Volquez, a 25-year-old All-Star, on Sunday, he'll have an opportunity to gauge himself against the best of his generation. And Aaron Heilman, a former first-round Draft pick like Pelfrey, thinks his teammate will handle the duel just fine.

Mets probable pitcher

Mike Pelfrey

  • #34 RHP
  • (8-6) 3.64 ERA 64 SO
Mets: Pelfrey continued his abrupt about-face the day before the All-Star break against the Rockies, gaining his sixth victory in six starts. Pelfrey has started four of the team's six shutouts. He pitched eight innings Sunday, extending his scoreless innings streak -- it spans three starts -- to 16. He has allowed one run in his three most recent starts (22 innings). He allowed six hits, and for the second straight start -- and the second time in his career -- he walked none. He hit a batter and struck out five. His start was moved up two days because Pedro Martinez's start had to be postponed two days.

Votto taking time to work on defense

Joey Votto has battled with his share of problems in the field, but he's had his share of defensive bright spots, too. While Reds manager Dusty Baker isn't too worried about Votto and thinks he has made a lot of progress, the young first baseman will have a chance to prove himself on Sunday vs. the Mets.

Reds probable pitcher

Edinson Volquez

  • #36 RHP
  • (12-3) 2.29 ERA 126 SO
Reds: Volquez will be throwing on regular rest after pitching in the seventh inning of the All-Star Game on Tuesday. He gave up a game-tying two-run home run to J.D. Drew but had two strikeouts. In his last start, Volquez pitched seven solid innings, giving up just two runs on six hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts. He's won two straight and has just one loss in his past nine starts.

Extra, extra: Mets come out on top (53-46) (48-52)

Mets 7, Reds 5 (10)

Heroics from Cancel

In a game with many turns -- Jose Reyes became the new franchise leader in triples, Mike Pelfrey allowed three homers and the action spilled into extras -- Robinson Cancel, after notching his second hit as a Met, provided the final twist by scoring the go-ahead run in the 10th.

Rare Volquez stumble

Aiming for a series win, Adam Dunn, Edwin Encarnacion and Brandon Phillips hit 'em far, but their homers weren't enough to seal the Reds' third win in a row. Edinson Volquez allowed a homer -- just his sixth of the season -- and picked up a no-decision in the extra-innings loss.
