Dodgers out to break first-place tie

Coming off Sunday's exhilarating ninth-inning comeback against the D-backs, the Dodgers will once again try to recapture sole possession of first place in the National League West Monday in Colorado.

Dodgers probable pitcher

Eric Stults

  • #50 LHP
  • (2-2) 2.67 ERA 21 SO
Dodgers: Eric Stults isn't overpowering, so his margin for error isn't great, as was demonstrated when he allowed first-inning back-to-back homers to the Marlins. But he made a quick adjustment and kept Florida off the scoreboard for the rest of his six-inning outing. He's already thrown a complete-game shutout, and that ERA is hard to overlook. When he keeps his off-speed stuff down, he can mow through a lineup efficiently.

Wells ready to return to Rockies

Right-handed pitcher Kip Wells has been on the disabled list since April 29, but he's expected to be activated on Monday and start the Rockies' series opener against the Dodgers.

Rockies probable pitcher

Kip Wells

  • #16 RHP
  • (1-1) 2.29 ERA 16 SO
Rockies: This will be Wells' return to the Majors. He hasn't appeared in a big league game since April 28, when the blood clot in his right hand made it impossible for him to continue. Also, it's his first start since the Rockies' first game, when he held the Cardinals to one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision that the Rockies eventually won. The Rockies need rotation leadership and are turning to Wells, who believed he should have been in the rotation when the season began.

No doubt about this rout (49-50) (43-58)

Dodgers 16, Rockies 10

Sweet 16 come across

The Dodgers sent 12 men to the plate in the first inning, scoring eight times and putting the game out of reach. They continued the barrage, though, tallying runs in the next four frames to take the opener. James Loney had five RBIs in the rout.

Return goes south

Kip Wells couldn't find any control after returning from the 60-day disabled list on Monday, allowing eight runs in one-third of an inning. Matt Holliday homered and Troy Tulowitzki looked good in his return from the DL, but the damage was already done.
