Piniella hoping Fukudome relaxes

Kosuke Fukudome is batting .179 (12-for-67) in his last 18 games. He has reached base in 29 of his last 34 games, but his average has dropped to .277. Manager Lou Piniella wants the outfielder to cut back on his hard work.

Cubs probable pitcher

Jason Marquis

  • #21 RHP
  • (6-5) 4.44 ERA 53 SO
Cubs: Marquis went 10 days between starts, and he seemed to benefit from the time off. The right-hander threw seven shutout innings on July 11 against the Giants, giving up three hits. Marquis is needed to step it up in the second half. He has a career 25-33 record after the All-Star break.

D-backs not panicking over struggles

As the losses pile up, the D-backs' players go about their business like all is well. They haven't played over .500 in any month since going 20-8 in April, but they still believe it's going to turn around.

Diamondbacks probable pitcher

Yusmeiro Petit

  • #48 RHP
  • (0-1) 3.06 ERA 11 SO
D-backs: Petit will get the nod instead of Micah Owings, who was needed to pitch in relief on Monday due to a depleted bullpen. Petit last pitched on Friday in relief and allowed one run over three innings against the Dodgers. The right-hander has made one start this year -- an emergency start in place of Owings -- and did not get a decision despite allowing just one run in six innings.

D-backs back-to-back: Cubs thwarted (58-42) (50-50)

Diamondbacks 9, Cubs 2

Cubs' well is dry

After being blanked in the opener, the Cubs couldn't revive their bats, and the bullpen allowed the D-backs to slither away in Chicago's fourth loss in its last five games. Mike Fontenot hit an RBI triple and Daryle Ward clubbed a pinch-hit homer, but the production ended there.

Action Jackson

Conor Jackson went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, including his 10th homer, to lift Arizona to its second straight win. Orlando Hudson also went yard, but was hit by a pitch and had to be helped off the field. Newly acquired Jon Rauch tossed a scoreless ninth with two Ks in his debut.
