Suppan returning against Cardinals

With the Brewers battling the rival Cardinals in St. Louis, the Milwaukee rotation is set to get a boost with Jeff Suppan coming off the disabled list.

Brewers: The Brewers are expecting Suppan to return to the starting rotation. The veteran right-hander was bothered by joint irritation in the elbow on his throwing arm, forcing him to the disabled list. Before going on the DL, Suppan had been struggling. He allowed 18 earned runs on 30 hits over 15 2/3 innings in his last four starts. Both Suppan and manager Ned Yost downplayed the degree of the injury, but felt that rest would be good for the righty.

Cardinals balancing today, tomorrow

With the Cardinals likely to use a reliever currently on their roster for Friday's start, they could use a lengthy outing from Kyle Lohse.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Kyle Lohse

  • #26 RHP
  • (12-2) 3.35 ERA 63 SO
Cardinals: Lohse hit his stride in May and he continues to sprint to the finish. With Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter on the disabled list, Lohse has provided the Cardinals with a much needed boost in their starting rotation and he has delivered. Lohse has not lost a start since May 8 and has lost only two games in his last 32 starts, dating back to July 2007. While he did not pitch his best in his last outing and was aided by some spectacular defense, Lohse pitched effective enough to last seven innings and give up two runs. Attributing his success to his confidence in his entire arsenal, Lohse has morphed into one of the better pitchers this year.

Brewers come back

Blanked through the first six frames, the Brewers refused to give in. Rickie Weeks and J.J. Hardy both delivered two-out RBIs in the eighth inning, and Bill Hall delivered a game-winning homer for the second straight night against the Cards.

Tough loss redux

Things were looking good for the Cards, with Kyle Lohse on the hill protecting a three-run lead in the seventh. But it wasn't meant to be, as Lohse tired and the 'pen gave up a game-winning homer for the second night in a row.
