Myers poised to make Majors return

Brett Myers returns to the Phillies after a stint in the Minors just in time to start the middle game of a pivotal three-game set vs. the rival Mets.

Phillies probable pitcher

Brett Myers

  • #39 RHP
  • (3-9) 5.84 ERA 88 SO
Myers will make his return to the Phillies' rotation in the pressure-filled atmosphere of Shea Stadium. Myers was optioned to the Minor Leagues last month to rediscover his fastball and swagger, which the righty feels he's accomplished. He made four starts at three levels, with positive results. He has not faced the Mets this season.

Lost in shuffle of Tuesday's tough loss to the Phillies was yet another home run by Carlos Delgado, who has enjoyed a summer resurgence of late.

Mets probable pitcher

John Maine

  • #33 RHP
  • (8-7) 4.22 ERA 98 SO
With his loss to the Reds on Friday, Maine has gone four starts without a victory -- he had lost twice -- and he has pitched merely 19 innings in the process. He has been neither effective nor particularly lucky. Maine's two starts against the Phillies this season have produced modest performances and no decisions, but each was a part of a Mets victory. His career numbers against them before this season include a 4-0 record and 2.13 ERA. And he's been more successful at Shea than he has been elsewhere -- 4-1 in nine starts -- this year.

My oh My

In their quest for distance in the NL East race, the Phillies put on a power display when Shane Victorino and Geoff Jenkins hit back-to-back homers. However, Brett Myers struggled with control and the bullpen squandered the support to let the Mets see a share of first place.

All the way, Jose

The Mets already had two runs on the board by the time they got their first hit off Brett Myers in the third, thanks to Myers' free passes. But the big break came from Jose Reyes, whose three-run homer in the sixth backed up John Maine and put the Mets in a first-place tie with their rivals.
