Orioles seeking everyday shortstop

They've been presented with four different options thus far this season, and still the Orioles have yet to fill the hole that Miguel Tejada left at shortstop with a consistent everyday starter.

Orioles probable pitcher

Daniel Cabrera

  • #40 RHP
  • (6-6) 4.86 ERA 78 SO
Orioles: It's safe to say that the Orioles 6-foot-9 right-hander is struggling. Cabrera suffered through his second consecutive start where he allowed six-plus runs, giving up seven earned runs to the Blue Jays on July 25. Tallying just one win in his last 12 starts, Cabrera has struggled with control, location and pitch selection -- even the balls that are hit for outs are the product of good solid contact. The good news for Cabrera is that he is 2-0 against the Yankees this season, defeating them at home in April and in Yankee Stadium in May. Both times the right-hander was able to go deep into the game and didn't allow more than two earned runs.

Rasner not affected by distractions

In the past and in the present, Darrell Rasner hasn't concerned himself much with the Trade Deadline. Even as reports say his team has interest in other starting pitchers -- Seattle's Jarrod Washburn has repeatedly surfaced -- Rasner doesn't find it difficult shove that aside.

Darrell Rasner

  • #43 RHP
  • (5-7) 4.83 ERA 48 SO
Yankees: In his first start in more than a week, Rasner limited the Twins to two runs through 5 2/3 innings Tuesday night. He held Minnesota scoreless through the first five innings before surrendering two runs in the sixth. The right-hander scattered four hits, walking four and striking out two. Rasner is 1-1 against Baltimore this season with a 0.69 ERA through 13 innings.

Huff puffs, blows away Yanks (51-55) (58-48)

Orioles 7, Yankees 6

Big lead holds up

Aubrey Huff laced a three-run double and scored in the four-run seventh and went deep in the ninth for the deciding run, as the offense provided enough support for a less-than-sharp George Sherrill and the bullpen to hang on to Daniel Cabrera's first win in 27 days.

Late charge cut short

Alex Rodriguez, who earlier homered, was drilled in the eighth, prompting Daniel Cabrera's ejection and sparking a two-run rally. The Yanks got three more in the ninth but left Bobby Abreu, who matched Jason Giambi's three hits, on second with the would-be tying run.
