When Joba Chamberlain made his last start, the plan to put Ivan Rodriguez in pinstripes was being ironed out. A day later, Rodriguez was in uniform and volunteering to catch bullpen sessions just to familiarize himself with the Yankees' starting rotation.

Joba Chamberlain

  • #62 RHP
  • (4-3) 2.24 ERA 99 SO
Yankees: Making his first appearance since he bested the Red Sox in his finest starting performance to date, Chamberlain limited Baltimore to two runs (one earned) over six innings Wednesday to post his second victory in as many starts. The 22-year-old scattered five hits while walking none and striking out six; New York has now won eight of Chamberlain's 11 big league starts. His only start against Texas was rough, a four-inning outing July 1 in which he allowed two runs, five hits and four walks over 91 pitches.

Rangers must beat heat, Yankees

The Rangers not only have to battle the Yankees in their next series, they also have to battle the elements. It's expected to be 104 degrees on Monday, but by gametime it could dip below 100, a cooling trend after Sunday's starting temperature of 103, the highest in the Majors this season.

Rangers probable pitcher

Vicente Padilla

  • #44 RHP
  • (12-5) 4.52 ERA 84 SO
Rangers: Padilla was nibbled on by the Mariners in his last start. In seven innings, he allowed 10 hits -- nine of which singles -- and three runs and earned a no-decision. The outing was Padilla's first without receiving a decision in nine starts, going back to May 22. Since coming off the disabled list on July 20, Padilla is 2-0 with a 3.60 ERA, pitching 20 innings over three starts. His start Monday will be his first this season against the Yankees. Padilla is 1-1 with a 5.23 ERA in only two career starts against New York.

Big Byrd carries day for Texas (61-51) (59-54)

Rangers 9, Yankees 5

This one hurts

Not only did Joba Chamberlain leave in the fifth inning with a stiff right shoulder, but the Yankees endured a loss in the most dramatic fashion: The Rangers' Marlon Byrd sunk New York with a walk-off grand slam in the ninth.

Wham, bam, slam

In a game that featured two balks in an inning, manager Ron Washington's ejection and acrobatic, diving catches, Marlon Byrd topped them all with his walk-off grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
