Following their four-game sweep of the Mets in June, the Padres had something to hang their hat on. They're hoping to steal another win on Wednesday.

Padres probable pitcher

Cha Seung Baek

  • #53 RHP
  • (3-6) 5.22 ERA 58 SO
Padres: Cha Seung Baek had a solid start going until he ran into a fifth-inning jam that saw him give up four runs (three earned) on four hits while throwing 31 pitches. The defense behind him didn't help him much in producing two errors, but catcher Josh Bard said that Baek "kept competing." Baek, who hasn't seen the seventh inning in his last seven starts continued an up-and-down season that has seen him show flashes but not on a consistent basis for the Padres. He currently carries a 3-6 record and 5.22 ERA into his next start.

Murphy makes his presence known

Daniel Murphy made an immediate impact at Shea, showing off his glove and hitting a crucial double on Tuesday. He'll be back in the lineup on Wednesday.

Mets probable pitcher

Pedro Martinez

  • #45 RHP
  • (3-2) 6.16 ERA 39 SO
Mets: Though the Mets entered last Friday's game with thoughts of keeping Martinez somewhere between 70-80 pitches, they allowed him to throw 87 of them against the Astros before calling it a night. That was enough for Martinez to complete five innings, keeping his Mets in the game in the process. Martinez allowed three runs on five hits -- though three of them were home runs. The start was his first in three weeks, after taking time off to nurse a groin injury and attend his father's funeral.

Homers erase errors

Edgar Gonzalez committed two errors, but in the long run, an error gave the Padres the win. The Mets tied it after winning pitcher Cha Seung Baek was handed a lead on homers by Jody Gerut and Brian Giles, then Luis Rodriguez scored on a misplay by David Wright. Chase Headley's tater provided insurance.

Murphy goes 3-for-5

Daniel Murphy's streak of "firsts" was extended when the rookie outfielder connected on his first big league triple. He'd later score on an error and add an RBI single. Pedro Martinez gave the Mets 6 1/3 innings, allowing just two more hits after surrendering a pair of solo home runs in the first inning.
