New faces join Tribe for Jays series

When the Indians open a three-game set with the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre on Friday night, right-handed starter Anthony Reyes and right-handed reliever Brendan Donnelly will be with them.

Indians probable pitcher

Anthony Reyes

  • #27 RHP
  • (2-1) 4.91 ERA 10 SO
The Indians will see if Reyes can get back to being the guy who won Game 1 of the 2006 World Series or if he's still the guy who struggled with the Cards the past two seasons. After joining the Indians in a July 26 trade, Reyes impressed the Tribe with his first two starts at Triple-A Buffalo, where he went 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA. He owns a career Major League record of 10-24 and ERA of 5.38 in 53 games, including 38 starts.

Barajas is hot hand in Jays' offense

Though the season started off slowly for Rod Barajas, Toronto's catcher has regained his power stroke and is hot going into the series against the Indians.

Blue Jays probable pitcher

David Purcey

  • #25 LHP
  • (1-2) 8.35 ERA 11 SO
The good news: Purcey allowed just three hits in his last start. The bad news: All three hits were home runs. Purcey started out hot, facing the minimum through three innings and striking out four of the nine batters he faced. He faded fast, though, allowing five runs the next two innings -- all on home runs -- before departing. Purcey will try to keep his pitches in the park in his next start Friday against the Indians, whom he's never pitched against.

Indians 5, Blue Jays 2

A debut winner

Win streak ends

Coming off a four-game sweep of the A's, the Jays weren't able to continue the momentum. Rookie David Purcey struck out a career-high eight while allowing three runs over six innings, but Toronto never led. Cleveland struck for three runs in the fourth inning and didn't look back.
