Padres look to end Cook's dominance

After dropping the opener of their three-tilt set vs. the division-rival Rockies on Friday, the Padres will face a tall order in Colorado's Aaron Cook, who's owned San Diego in his career.

Padres probable pitcher

Greg Maddux

  • #30 RHP
  • (5-8) 4.17 ERA 72 SO
Padres: The 42-year-old Maddux showed he wouldn't need 14 consecutive starts between victories, as was the case recently, as win No. 352 came rather easily, when he allowed one run in six innings in a victory over the Giants on Aug. 3. Maddux even had an RBI single, his first RBI in nearly two years. Maddux had good movement on his fastball, something he said he typically gets at PETCO Park but not so much elsewhere. He didn't walk a batter and hit one batter. He worked fast and got ahead of hitters. It was, really, vintage Maddux.

Cook eyes rebound effort vs. Padres

Though he was roughed up in his last outing against the Nationals, Rockies All-Star hurler Aaron Cook hasn't made a habit of stringing together bad starts this season.

Rockies probable pitcher

Aaron Cook

  • #28 RHP
  • (14-7) 3.68 ERA 77 SO
Rockies: Cook had been practically infallible during his three-game winning streak from July 20-30, but he turned in one of his worst pitching performances of the season Monday against the Nationals. There wasn't any tilt depth to most of his pitches, and his trademark sinker stayed up in the zone. Cook, who had a two-run throwing error in the third, gave up seven runs -- four earned -- in 5 2/3 innings. It was his third-shortest outing of the season and tied his season high for runs allowed. Cook has been dominant against the Padres this season, going 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA in two games. He threw a complete-game shutout against them on July 1.

Maddux cruises

Cook roughed up

Even his favorite opponent couldn't remedy Aaron Cook's struggles, as the righty, owner of 10 career wins vs. the Padres, was well on his way to another fine start against San Diego before a five-run sixth inning sealed his fate. Chris Iannetta stroked his 13th homer in the loss.
