With an upcoming series against the National League East's last-place Nationals, and four rematches against a Pirates team that ended the Mets' homestand with a loss on Monday to make it two straight defeats, manager Jerry Manuel's team needs to improve its 30-33 record against clubs with a below-.500 record.

Mets probable pitcher

Johan Santana

  • #57 LHP
  • (9-7) 2.85 ERA 135 SO
Mets: Santana pitched well against the Padres on Thursday, but his 10th win eluded him again as the Mets' bullpen could not hold onto his lead. The lefty gave up just four hits through seven-plus innings and held San Diego to two runs, recording seven strikeouts with three walks. Santana left the game after throwing 104 pitches -- his fourth straight start that he has surpassed the 100-pitch mark. He has consistently left his team in a position to win, but Santana has suffered tough luck losses this season. Thursday marked the sixth time the bullpen has cost him a victory. Santana gave up just two runs on seven hits through seven innings in his last start against the Nationals.

Easley does it

It was a shaky first for Johan Santana, who handed two runs back to the Nats after the Mets gave him a lead . Though the ace was smoother from there, he served a homer in the seventh -- but when Damion Easley took a hit to the helmet with the bases loaded, the Mets took control.

No dream ending

Odalis Perez gave a solid effort, but the Nats weren't able to back him. Once he passed the baton, however, Ryan Langerhans delivered a pinch-hit homer to tie the game. But getting into a bases-loaded jam in the eighth did Washington no favors, as the Mets took the opener.
