It's hard to predict what the Cubs offense will do, but on Wednesday, they'll have plenty of opportunities. The Cubs and Atlanta Braves will play a split doubleheader at Turner Field, beginning at 12:10 p.m. CT.

Cubs probable pitcher

Jason Marquis

  • #21 RHP
  • (7-7) 4.73 ERA 67 SO
Cubs: Marquis picked up his first win since June 21 in his last start, but he wishes he could have pitched better. The right-hander gave up four runs (three courtesy of a Carlos Lee homer) in 6 1/3 innings against the Astros and was backed by 11 Cubs runs. This will be his first start versus the club that drafted him since June 9, 2007. Marquis hopes for better results than that last outing in Atlanta when he was tagged for six runs in 1 2/3 innings.

When rain postponed his scheduled start during Tuesday's series opener against the Cubs, Charlie Morton learned that his opposition in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader at Turner Field won't be Rich Harden, who Braves manager Bobby Cox considers the best pitcher he's seen this season.

Braves probable pitcher

Charlie Morton

  • #50 RHP
  • (3-5) 5.70 ERA 32 SO
Braves: Morton has seemingly turned the corner while allowing runs in just one of his past 14 innings. The best outing of his young career arguably came on Thursday, when he allowed five singles in seven scoreless innings against the Diamondbacks. Just five days earlier, he'd blanked the Brewers for six innings before allowing a pair of seventh-inning runs. Confidence has always been an issue with this right-hander, who has been hurt by an inability to consistently keep his pitches down in the strike zone.

First leg of twin bill to Cubs (72-47) (55-64)

Cubs 10, Braves 2

Soto drives in four

Geovany Soto clubbed a two-run homer and drove in four runs, and Jim Edmonds homered and notched three RBIs to back a solid Jason Marquis, as the Cubs rolled to victory over the Braves in the first game of Wednesday's day-night doubleheader.

Morton struggles

Charlie Morton didn't have his best stuff in the first game of Wednesday's twin bill against the Cubs, as the rookie right-hander allowed four runs on four hits over just 2 1/3 innings in the loss. Omar Infante went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
