Manuel recalls Manny's early days

The billboards posted around Dodger Stadium display it clearly: "The Los Angeles Dodgers welcome Manny being Manny." Said Phils skipper Charlie Manuel, "He's ideal for here. He's a lot of fun, but you've got to really know him."

Joe Blanton

  • #56 RHP
  • (6-12) 4.71 ERA 76 SO
Though the Phillies ended up losing on Friday to the Pirates, Joe Blanton came up big, tossing seven innings of one-hit ball. In four games with the Phils, he has just one win, but he has compiled a solid 3.27 ERA and has held batters to just a .205 average.

Penny aims to take baton and run with it

Derek Lowe and Clayton Kershaw kept the high-octane Phillies in check during the first two games of the series. It will be Brad Penny's turn to replicate their results when he takes the mound Wednesday in his second start since shoulder stiffness kept him out of action for almost two months.

Dodgers probable pitcher

Brad Penny

  • #31 RHP
  • (6-9) 5.66 ERA 47 SO
Dodgers: Penny returned from seven weeks on the disabled list and looked like he had just been on the disabled list, rarely surpassing 90 mph with his fastball. Somehow, he limited the Giants to only one hit in five innings and snapped a seven-game losing streak with his first win since May 2. But he walked three without a strikeout, further evidence of his rustiness.

Nomar's knock knots NL West (64-56) (61-59)

Dodgers 7, Phillies 6

Phillies falter late

As they did on Tuesday, the Phillies held a late lead, only to see it slip away in an eventual walk-off defeat. Ryan Howard, Greg Dobbs and Jayson Werth homered early and Joe Blanton gutted out five innings, but the Phils now find themselves tied with the Mets atop NL East.

Dodgers show mettle

With one swing, Nomar Garciaparra lifted the Dodgers to a walk-off victory and a first-place tie with the D-backs, homering in the bottom of the ninth to cap a five-run comeback in dramatic fashion. Jeff Kent delivered a key two-run double, and Manny Ramirez and Andre Ethier went deep.
