Wagner solid in rehab appearance

Billy Wagner closed out Double-A Binghamton's game on Thursday night, getting one step closer to returning to the Mets. But the bullpen's body of work in Washington over the past three games might have given manager Jerry Manuel some comfort heading into a four-game series against the Pirates this weekend.

Mets probable pitcher

Mike Pelfrey

  • #34 RHP
  • (10-8) 4.11 ERA 82 SO
Mets: Pelfrey was pulled on Sunday after allowing six runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Marlins, struggling with his command by matching his three strikeouts with three walks and a hit batsman. The first, second and third innings were a setback, but the fourth and fifth were his undoing, as he faced 15 batters who accounted for four of his earned runs. In three appearances against the Marlins this season, Pelfrey has surrendered 15 runs in 12 2/3 innings. Next, he'll take on the Pirates, whom he has never faced.

Davis looks to prove himself vs. Mets

With time running short to prove his value to the Bucs, Jason Davis will need a solid outing Friday against the Mets' formidable lineup.

Pirates probable pitcher

Jason Davis

  • #35 RHP
  • (1-1) 1.38 ERA 6 SO
Pirates: If Pirates manager John Russell wants to stick with Davis, he'll get the go on Friday when the Bucs host the New York Mets. Davis did well in his first start this season for the Pirates, on Sunday at Philadelphia. He surrendered two runs, both unearned, on four hits. Though he took a no-decision, he displayed good velocity on his fastball over six innings and showed a decent slider. Prior to the Sunday's start, Davis had pitched seven innings out of the bullpen, giving up two runs.
