With the Cubs needing a sixth starter after a doubleheader earlier in the week, lefty Sean Marshall will make his fourth start of the season Saturday.

Cubs: Marshall got the call over Jason Marquis on short rest or rookie Jeff Samardzija. It'll be the lefty's fourth start this season. He started on June 24 against Baltimore, on June 29 against the White Sox, and July 6 against St. Louis, and picked up a win against the Cardinals. As a starter, Marshall is 1-2 with a 4.08 ERA, giving up eight runs on 18 hits and three walks over 17 2/3 innings. The Cubs had to tweak their rotation after playing a day-night doubleheader against Atlanta on Wednesday.

Right-hander Anibal Sanchez will be looking to build off his best start since returning from the DL when the Marlins take on the Cubs on Saturday night.

Marlins probable pitcher

Anibal Sanchez

  • #36 RHP
  • (1-2) 4.08 ERA 14 SO
Marlins: Sanchez suffered his second straight loss despite a solid performance against the Cardinals on Monday. Sanchez gave up three runs on six hits while striking out eight -- which tied his career high -- and walking two. He left after throwing a season-high 103 pitches -- 69 for strikes. Sanchez's biggest mistake was a two-run homer he gave up to Yadier Molina in the fourth inning, which gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish. But after that, the 24-year-old retired 11 of the next 14 hitters he faced.

Gregg bounces back (75-48) (64-60)

Marlins 2, Cubs 1

Streak snapped

After winning nine straight on the road, including a dramatic comeback Friday, the Cubs couldn't come through with the clutch hit against the Marlins. Catcher Henry Blanco's home run accounted for Chicago's lone tally on the night.
