Pedro coming full circle at PNC

The last time Pedro Martinez pitched at PNC Park, on Sept. 15, 2006, he tore his left calf muscle, triggering a slew of injuries that have compromised him as a pitcher. He is hoping to reverse that bad karma on Saturday.

Mets: Martinez sustained a Mets lead through six innings against the Pirates on Monday, holding them to one run and three hits. Four walks opposed to three strikeouts put Martinez in a couple tough spots, but he worked his way out of jams with a timely changeup and a fastball that peaked at 90 mph in the latter innings. He'll face the Pirates again, this time on the road at PNC Park, one of three ballparks where Martinez has yet to allow a home run in his career.

Jack Wilson knows how the business of baseball is done. The longest-tenured Pirate has seen teammates come and go, and while he doesn't always welcome transition, he knows that trades can often strengthen a team, too.

Zach Duke

  • #57 LHP
  • (4-10) 5.10 ERA 66 SO
Pirates: Duke settled into a rhythm after getting off to a shaky start against the Mets on Monday afternoon. Duke was tagged for five runs (three earned) and gave up two homers, but most of his struggles came in the first three innings, and the lefty kept his team in the game long enough to come away with a no-decision. He gave up eight hits, striking out three, with one walk. Duke remains 2-0 in four career starts against the Mets, and he will get the chance to improve that record on Saturday.

Reyes of hope (67-56) (55-68)

Mets 7, Pirates 4

Mets take off early

Jose Reyes got the Mets on the board with a home run in his first at-bat in the game and added an RBI triple in the second as the Mets led the entire length of the game. Pedro Martinez cruised through Pittsburgh's lineup to put together his longest start of the season.

Comeback falls short

Though the Pirates trailed from the first at-bat of the game and entered the ninth down by six, they put together a late rally that brought the tying run to the plate with one out. But the next two batters were retired, and the Pirates dropped the second game of the series.
