Versatile DeRosa producing at the plate

When the Cubs wrap up their series with the Marlins on Sunday at 12:10 p.m. CT, they'll be looking for continued offensive spark from Mark DeRosa.

Cubs probable pitcher

Ryan Dempster

  • #46 RHP
  • (13-5) 2.92 ERA 139 SO
Dempster is coming off a big win over the Cardinals. He gave up two runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings in the game, striking out six. The former closer is now two wins shy of his career-high of 15. He did not get a decision against the Marlins on July 25, giving up one run on two hits over six innings while striking out six. But he also walked six in that game.

Marlins feeding off energy of big crowds

The Marlins will go for the series win against the Cubs on Sunday at Dolphin Stadium, where fans of both teams have shown up in large numbers this weekend.

Marlins probable pitcher

Chris Volstad

  • #41 RHP
  • (4-2) 3.03 ERA 26 SO
Volstad's outing against the Cardinals on Tuesday was cut short right before he began to get into a groove. Still, the 21-year-old picked up his first win at home in giving up three runs in five innings to the Cardinals before a long rain delay kicked in. Volstad's only trouble came in the first inning, when he started off the game by loading the bases with nobody out, then gave up a bases-clearing double to Ryan Ludwick. But after that inning, Volstad gave up just two hits and one walk. He retired the last six batters he faced and finished the night throwing 72 pitches.

Cubs end trip with an eight-run rip (76-48) (64-61)

Cubs 9, Marlins 2

Road warriors

After having their nine-game road winning streak snapped Saturday, the Cubs bounced back with their 36th come-from-behind win of the season and sixth straight series win thanks to an eight-run outburst in the seventh inning.

Bullpen falters

The good news was starter Chris Volstad didn't allow a run in the first six innings. But after exiting with two on and none out in the seventh, the Cubs unloaded for eight runs, five of them charged to struggling reliever Renyel Pinto.
