Reds remain a factor in pennant race

The Reds are 21 1/2 games out of first place. But that does not mean they're not participants in the pennant race. The Reds will face division opponents in 28 of their last 38 games, beginning with a series against the first-place Cubs.

Reds probable pitcher

Johnny Cueto

  • #47 RHP
  • (8-11) 4.90 ERA 136 SO
Reds: Getting through the first inning cleanly has been an issue for Cueto, especially in his past two starts. He threw 26 first-inning pitches two starts ago and 27 in the first during a 3-1 Reds win over the Pirates on Thursday. The rookie lasted only five innings and allowed one earned run and four hits, with three walks and seven strikeouts, in what became a solid outing.

Gaudin enjoying his time with new team

Reliever Chad Gaudin has had a great time since his July trade to the Cubs, who begin a three-game series against the Reds at Wrigley Field on Tuesday.

Cubs probable pitcher

Rich Harden

  • #40 RHP
  • (7-2) 2.17 ERA 141 SO
Cubs: Harden picked up a win in his last start, his second since joining the Cubs on July 8. However, it wasn't pretty. He retired the first eight batters he faced, then walked the bases loaded. Harden finished with five scoreless innings and gave up two hits and walked five. He had trouble with his fastball -- it was up in the warmups and in the game. He'll be working on six days rest against the Reds.

Harden keeps Cubs cruisin' (55-71) (77-48)

Cubs 5, Reds 0

Outdueled

Johnny Cueto was locked in a pitchers' duel all night with Cubs righty Rich Harden, and matched his counterpart for most of his seven innings. But Harden got the best of him, both with his arm and his bat, as his sacrifice bunt drove in the winning run.

Hard-ly hittable

Rich Harden continued to impress, dominating an overmatched Reds team with seven strong innings. And if pitching a gem wasn't enough, Harden used his bat to drive in the first run with a sacrifice bunt in the fifth, Harden's first career RBI.
