Yankees need bats to stay hot on road

After pummeling the Royals in the finale of their brief homestand, the Yankees take to the road to continue their playoff push with hopes that they don't leave their offense behind in the Bronx.

Yankees probable pitcher

Darrell Rasner

  • #43 RHP
  • (5-9) 5.18 ERA 58 SO
Yankees: With Dan Giese on the 15-day disabled list, the Yankees will turn to Rasner as they open a three-game series with the Blue Jays in Toronto on Tuesday. Rasner started on Aug. 13 at Minnesota and kept the Yankees in the game, limiting the Twins to three runs (two earned) on four hits through five innings. Still, the result was another loss for Rasner, who is 0-2 with a 5.76 ERA in his last five appearances (four starts). He takes on the Blue Jays, whom he beat with five innings of four-run (three earned) ball on July 12.

Jays face tough road down the stretch

Among the 12 remaining series on the Jays' regular-season plate are 10 against teams above them in either the American League East or Wild Card standings. That slate begins on Tuesday, when the Jays host the rival Yankees in the opener of a three-game set at Rogers Centre.

Blue Jays probable pitcher

A.J. Burnett

  • #34 RHP
  • (15-9) 4.67 ERA 165 SO
Blue Jays: Burnett has won five starts in a row, tying rotation mates Roy Halladay and Jesse Litsch for the longest winning streak of the season by a Blue Jays starter. On Tuesday, Burnett picked up a win on the road against the Tigers after giving up four runs on eight hits, including a season-high three home runs, with six strikeouts and one walk. Burnett upped his American League-leading strikeout total to 165 in the 108-pitch effort, which marked his seventh win in his past eight starts.

Jays Scut past Yanks (66-59) (65-60)

Blue Jays 2, Yankees 1

Costly mistake

The first time Johnny Damon misplayed a fly ball in center field, the Yankees escaped. But in the eighth inning, Damon couldn't handle a fly ball with two outs, allowing the Blue Jays to score the winning run while also spoiling Darrell Rasner's beautiful performance on the mound.

Late rally wins it

The Blue Jays were unable to push across a run through the first six innings and trailed much of the game in spite of A.J. Burnett's splendid start. But a home run from Adam Lind, his third in as many games, and an RBI double from Marco Scutaro won it for Toronto.
