Mariners seeking consistent DH

Consistency is not the word that would define the designated-hitter situation for the Mariners this season. Seattle has used 14 DHs this season. The club record for designated hitters is 18 in 1993.

Mariners probable pitcher

Felix Hernandez

  • #34 RHP
  • (7-7) 3.04 ERA 140 SO
Mariners: The right-hander had another quality start in his most recent outing, holding the Angels to three runs over six innings and four over seven, but had to settle for his ninth no-decision of the season. His ERA climbed over the 3.00 mark, but is still an impressive 3.04 after 23 starts, much better than his 7-7 record. He had gone four starts without surrendering a home run before Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer to left-center. Hernandez has a career record of 1-1 against the White Sox with a 5.01 ERA in four starts.

Richard returns to White Sox

Because White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen still wanted someone to work in relief between starts, the team recalled Clayton Richard, who will get the nod on Tuesday against the Mariners.

White Sox probable pitcher

Clayton Richard

  • #54 LHP
  • (0-2) 9.64 ERA 13 SO
White Sox: Ozzie Guillen chose to go with Richard for Tuesday's start against the Mariners. The left-handed rookie worked a perfect ninth inning on Sunday against the A's and struck out two batters. He struggled in each of his three starts during his first stint with the big league club, throwing just 13 innings and surrendering 19 runs. Richard has struggled particularly at adjusting to hitters late in the game. Batters are hitting .286 when facing him the first time, but that number goes up to .346 the second time around and .667 when he sees a batter a third time.
