Reds starters have yet to throw a complete game in the 2008 season. The club record for fewest complete games in a season is two -- which was done in 2001, 2002 and 2005.

Reds probable pitcher

Bronson Arroyo

  • #61 RHP
  • (10-10) 5.51 ERA 125 SO
Reds: Key two-out hits hurt Arroyo in a 5-3 loss to the Cardinals on Friday, including Rick Ankiel's first-inning two-run home run on a curveball that was left up. Arroyo gave up five earned runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings, with two walks and five strikeouts. He also threw 67 pitches through his first three innings, eventually settling down and pitching well before departing. Still, he paid for the early mistakes.

Cubs entering stretch of sub-.500 teams

Starting with this three-game set with Cincinnati, the Cubs play nine times against National League bottom feeders. These are the games they're supposed to win, a statement that can easily turn dangerous.

Cubs probable pitcher

Ted Lilly

  • #30 LHP
  • (12-6) 4.32 ERA 141 SO
Cubs: Lilly is coming off a win over the Braves last Thursday. The lefty gave up four runs on eight hits over six innings in that game, striking out eight. He's 2-0 with a 3.20 ERA in his last three starts, having struck out 17 over 19 2/3 innings. Lilly is 0-2 so far this season against the Reds. In his last start against Cincinnati, on July 10, the lefty gave up two home runs in 2 2/3 innings. The Reds bashed seven homers in that game.

Better late than never for Reds (56-71) (77-49)

Reds 2, Cubs 1

Arroyo hangs on

It seemed like it might be a historically bad night for the Reds through five innings. But after going hitless for the first five frames, Ryan Hanigan roped a double to left-center, waking up the offense just enough to support a solid effort from Bronson Arroyo.

No no-no for Lilly

For five innings, Ted Lilly looked to be on his way to something special. But after no-hitting the Reds for five frames, things slowly fell apart for the lefty, who departed after seven innings having allowed just two runs on two hits. Lilly is now 0-3 vs. the Reds this season.
