NY Yankees (66-59) at Toronto (65-60)

As the dates continue to fall off the calendar, Alex Rodriguez is among those who believe the Yankees need to begin pushing the envelope a little more, taking chances to counteract the fact that their postseason odds are dwindling.

Yankees probable pitcher

Andy Pettitte

  • #46 LHP
  • (12-9) 4.30 ERA 126 SO
Yankees: Pettitte pitched seven solid innings to keep the Yankees in the game on Friday night, coming away with his second straight no-decision. It marked just his fifth no-decision of the season. The lefty held the Royals to six hits and struck out seven, but he was hurt by walks, as two of the four runners he put on base by the walk crossed home plate. Pettitte was tagged for three runs, but he worked himself out of several jams to limit the damage and said he felt good on the mound. In his last outing against Toronto, Pettitte gave up eight hits and four runs through six innings to take the loss.

Since being called up to the Blue Jays in June, Adam Lind has been one of Toronto's best hitters. As well, the case can now be made that he is quickly becoming one of the team's main sources of power.

Blue Jays probable pitcher

David Purcey

  • #25 LHP
  • (2-3) 5.93 ERA 23 SO
Blue Jays: Purcey fell behind in a lot of counts in his last start, but managed to escape any damage, spinning six shutout innings against the Tigers on Wednesday. Purcey, who logged 99 pitches in the effort, might have pitched deeper into the game had it not been for a 49-minute rain delay in the top of the seventh inning. The left-hander finished with four strikeouts and three walks, scattering just two hits in the win over Detroit. Purcey is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts at Rogers Centre this season.

Pettitte, Yanks make quick work of Jays (67-59) (65-61)

Yankees 5, Blue Jays 1

Jeter equals Maris

In a game that lasted less than two and a half hours, Derek Jeter hit his 203rd career homer, tying him with Roger Maris for 11th on New York's all-time list, giving the Yanks a five-run edge. That would be more than enough, as Andy Pettitte held Toronto scoreless until the sixth.

Jays miss opportunity

A win on Wednesday would have tied the Jays with the Yankees in the both the American League East and Wild Card standings, but it wasn't to be after starter David Purcey allowed five runs in four innings, and the run production was limited to Alex Rios' RBI single in the sixth inning.
