Great atmosphere following Mariners

The Mariners might not be contending for the playoffs this season, but they're getting a chance to experience the pennant-race atmosphere. They finish up their eight-game road trip on Wednesday with a game against the White Sox.

Mariners probable pitcher

R.A. Dickey

  • #41 RHP
  • (3-7) 4.92 ERA 55 SO
Mariners: The knuckleball specialist returns to the rotation just three days after being sent to the bullpen, replacing the injured Carlos Silva (elbow tendinitis) for the time being. Dickey, 2-7 as a starter this season, tied a Major League record during a relief appearance against the Twins on Sunday by throwing four wild pitches in the fifth inning. For whatever reason, his knuckler was moving more than usual inside the Metrodome, compared to the movement it has outside. He figures to get at least two more starts before leaving the rotation again.

White Sox won't allow a letdown

A letdown at U.S. Cellular Field? For this White Sox team, which owns a 44-19 record at home, that's not likely. And playing a team like the Mariners, owners of the worst record in the American League, it certainly isn't probable.

White Sox probable pitcher

Gavin Floyd

  • #34 RHP
  • (12-6) 3.75 ERA 103 SO
White Sox: It wasn't Floyd at his best during Friday's 6-4 loss to the A's in Oakland, but the right-hander certainly pitched well enough to win. He allowed one earned run on six hits over 5 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking two. Floyd also threw 110 pitches against an extremely patient Oakland offense. Floyd has one start against the Mariners this season, and it was not a good one, as he allowed five runs on nine hits over 3 2/3 innings during a loss at Safeco Park. Floyd has a career 0-2 record with a 10.13 ERA against Seattle, but he has an 8-2 record at U.S. Cellular Field this season.

Griffey, Sox plead the fifth (46-80) (73-54)

White Sox 15, Mariners 3

Short day for Dickey

After a couple relief outings, R.A. Dickey struggled in his return to the Mariners' rotation. The knuckleballer lasted only two innings and allowed eight runs in a lopsided loss to the White Sox. Hot-hitting Raul Ibanez was the bright spot for Seattle, driving in all three runs with an RBI single and his 20th home run.

Griffey makes history

Ken Griffey Jr. matched Sammy Sosa for fifth place on MLB's career home run list with No. 609, helping the White Sox secure their fifth straight victory. Junior's two-run shot in the second inning was his first for Chicago. Alexei Ramirez's three-run jack capped a six-run first frame and was the first of four Sox long balls.
