Jeter on verge of milestone

Derek Jeter remains just one hit shy of reaching 2,500 for his career, a plateau that has only been reached by 87 players in Major League Baseball history, and he can reach the mark Friday in Baltimore.

Yankees probable pitcher

Mike Mussina

  • #35 RHP
  • (16-7) 3.35 ERA 106 SO
Yankees: Mussina bounced back from a three-run first inning to claim his 16th win on Sunday afternoon against the Royals. After he gave up six hits through the first nine batters he faced, the veteran retired the next 14 to keep them off the scoreboard. He struck out five and did not allow a walk through six innings. Mussina has thrown at least six innings in nine of his last ten games. The righty has struggled against Baltimore this season, going 0-2 with an 11.12 ERA.

The Orioles have had an entire week to decide who will be the starter for Friday's series opener with the Yankees, and as of late Wednesday night, all they had done was clearly state who that starter would not be.

Orioles probable pitcher

Radhames Liz

  • #62 RHP
  • (4-3) 7.47 ERA 33 SO
Orioles: Baltimore removed both Garrett Olson and Dennis Sarfate from the rotation on Monday and is expected to have Radhames Liz to make this start. Liz, who would be called up from Triple-A Norfolk, last appeared in the Major Leagues on July 26, when he allowed six runs in 5 2/3 innings against the Angels and lost for the third time in four starts.

Jeter hits No. 2,500

Derek Jeter wasted no time writing his name in the history books, taking the first pitch he saw in the first inning and rapping career hit No. 2,500. That was just the beginning for the Yanks, as Bobby Abreu went 5-for-5, and twice the offense connected on back-to-back homers.

Win gets away

Ramon Hernandez continued his torrid pace at the plate, recording his 19th hit in his past 20 games with a solo homer, but the Orioles couldn't hold off the Yanks in the series opener at Camden Yards. Starter Radhames Liz worked out of some trouble early and exited in the fifth.
