Chi Cubs (81-50) at Pittsburgh (57-74)

To this day, Aramis Ramirez doesn't know why Pirates fans boo him when he comes to the plate at PNC Park. All he did during his time in Pittsburgh was put together one of his most successful seasons, hitting .300 and slugging 34 home runs and 112 RBIs. But the lack of affection hasn't prevented him or his teammates from playing well in Pittsburgh.

Cubs probable pitcher

Carlos Zambrano

  • #38 RHP
  • (13-5) 3.29 ERA 111 SO
Cubs: Let's see if Zambrano can keep his hitting streak going. He belted his fourth home run of the season in his last start to keep his streak alive at seven games. Big Z also picked up the win against the Reds, giving up one run over seven innings. He was able to slow down his delivery and correct some mechanical flaws that have popped up in the last two starts. He did walk the leadoff batter -- something that really annoys the right-hander. Right now, he's batting .361 and has an ERA of 3.29. That's pretty good.

August the cruelest month for Pirates

Pittsburgh will have played the three first-place teams in the National League -- New York, Chicago and Arizona -- a total of 14 times in August. Add second-place Milwaukee (six games) and Philadelphia (three games), as well as a pair of games against Wild Card challenger St. Louis, and the Pirates have had the Majors' toughest schedule this month.

Pirates probable pitcher

Ian Snell

  • #45 RHP
  • (5-10) 5.60 ERA 108 SO
Pirates: Snell picked up just his third win since mid-April his last time out and finally looked dominant in doing so. The right-hander relied heavily on his changeup and slider to complement his fastball, which he established early. The key for Snell continues to be going aggressively after hitters, which he did successfully on Tuesday. If he does so, Snell can limit his pitch count, which has been on the high end early in games too often this year. Snell is winless in two starts against the Cubs this season. He has allowed seven runs in 10 innings.

Cubs 14, Pirates 9

Battery powered

Out of rhythm early, Chicago broke it open in the eighth, bringing 11 men to the plate and walking home the tying and winning runs. Geovany Soto drove in seven, and Carlos Zambrano drove in one more, earning the Cubs their ninth straight series win and 12th road win in 13 games.

Bullpen scarred

Adam LaRoche doubled in two in the first to start the scoring, and six Pirates starters had multihit nights, but the bullpen walked in the loss in a seven-run eighth. With this contest, the Bucs, who are on a six-game winless streak, dropped game No. 6 to the Cubs at PNC Park.
