Mets set for showdown with rival Phils

Every game is important, but some matchups take on extra meaning down the stretch. That will be the case when the Mets hit the road Tuesday to take on the Phillies in a two-game series with the top spot in the National League East standings at stake.

Mets probable pitcher

Pedro Martinez

  • #45 RHP
  • (4-3) 4.97 ERA 55 SO
Mets: By the time Martinez handed the ball to manager Jerry Manuel with one on and no outs in the eighth inning Thursday, his veteran trickery had worn out against the Braves, who tacked on four runs in seven innings. Manuel doesn't foresee Martinez, whose fastball is consistently working in the mid-80s mph, to last more than a couple of rotations through an opponent's lineup. But Martinez seemingly surpassed those expectations, striking out six, taking the mound to start the eighth, and surpassing 100 pitches. In his last outing in Philadelphia, Martinez allowed two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings and won.

Phillies probable pitcher

Jamie Moyer

  • #50 LHP
  • (11-7) 3.54 ERA 99 SO
The 22-year veteran ran his streak of allowing three runs or fewer to 14 with a fine effort against Washington. In that game, he surrendered one earned run in 6 2/3 innings, but he received a no-decision. In 18 career starts against the Mets this season, the lefty is 7-4 with a 2.85 ERA. He has faced them four times this season, giving up three, two, two and one run in those outings.

Dramatic win vaults Phils into first (73-60) (73-59)

Mets can't hang on

The Mets built an early seven-run lead on the strength of home runs from Damion Easley, who had four hits, and Fernando Tatis, but Pedro Martinez gave five runs back and the bullpen was unable to close the door in the opener vs. the Phils.

Coste the hero

A seven-run deficit after 3 1/2 innings? No problem for the Phillies, who stormed back to stun the Mets and take over first place. Jimmy Rollins led the charge with five hits, and Chris Coste's walk-off single in the 13th capped the stunning comeback.
