Less than two months ago, Joe Blanton and Rich Harden wore the same green and yellow uniform, and pitched for the A's. On Friday, the former teammates will meet for the first time as opponents, when the Phillies and Cubs play the second game of a four-game series at Wrigley Field.

Cubs keep tabs on Hurricane Gustav

Ryan Theriot, Chad Gaudin, Mike Fontenot and Jon Lieber are watching the Weather Channel more these days than sports headline news. Hurricane Gustav is headed toward the U.S., and the four Cubs players have homes and family which could be affected.

Cubs probable pitcher

Rich Harden

  • #40 RHP
  • (9-2) 2.00 ERA 162 SO
Cubs: Harden struck out 11 over seven innings in his last start against the Nationals to match his personal high. The only other time he fanned 11 was on June 26 this year against the Phillies. He now has seven double-digit-strikeout games in his career, and five have come since joining the Cubs on July 8. He gave up one run and has an 0.47 ERA in his last three starts. Harden also did not walk a batter, the sixth time in his career he's avoided that in a start.

Seven-up: Soriano's shot secures win (73-62) (85-50)

Phils lose ground

Unable to hold the lead, the Phillies were denied the go-ahead run in the seventh on a close call at first. It came back to haunt them when Clay Condrey allowed a home run in the seventh, which dropped the Phils 1 1/2 games back in the NL East.

Cubs keep rolling

A day after coming back from a late deficit, the Cubs rallied for their seventh straight victory -- and 39th in comeback fashion -- as Alfonso Soriano broke a seventh-inning tie with a solo blast. Daryle Ward and Kosuke Fukudome each drove in a run.
