Cormier stepping in for O's in finale

Forty-three walks and 55 earned runs allowed in their past five games, it has become obvious that pitching have become the root of the Orioles late-season issues. And with staff ace Jeremy Guthrie missing his start, Baltimore turns to Lance Cormier to lead them in the series finale on Wednesday.

Lance Cormier

  • RHP
  • (2-3) 4.61 ERA 38 SO
Cormier started nine of his 10 appearances in 2007, but all 35 of his trips to the mound this season were out of the bullpen. That will change Wednesday in Boston, as the fourth-year right-hander looks to avoid a sweep. Cormier has 38 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings this season, but recorded a 6.60 ERA in nine August appearances.

The Red Sox are in familiar territory. Heading into Wednesday, they are in prime position to take all three games of this series against the Orioles before heading on a quick road trip to Texas over the weekend.

Red Sox probable pitcher

Daisuke Matsuzaka

  • #18 RHP
  • (16-2) 2.82 ERA 124 SO
Dice-K pitched perhaps his most well-rounded game on Friday against the White Sox, blanking Chicago on just two hits and two walks. While he often battles high pitch counts by the fifth inning, Matsuzaka only threw 103 pitches in eight full innings of work. He orchestrated six innings where he faced the minimum three batters. In the process, Dice-K snagged his team-leading 16th win on the year.

'Pen surrenders lead

The Orioles jumped out to a four-run lead in the fourth inning and starter Lance Cormier threw three shutout innings, but the Red Sox pounced on the bullpen late to tie the game, and reliever Jim Miller's throwing error lost the game in the ninth.

Comeback ousts O's

After the Red Sox fell behind by four runs, Dustin Pedroia homered in the seventh and Mark Kotsay's two-run triple in the eighth knotted the game. Alex Cora scored the winning run on a Baltimore throwing error to boost Boston to a sweep.
