Friday is coming soon, and with it comes Philadelphia's most crucial series. The Phillies enter Flushing, N.Y., for their final three regular-season games at Shea Stadium needing a sweep to tie the Mets atop the National League East.

Phillies probable pitcher

Brett Myers

  • #39 RHP
  • (8-10) 4.40 ERA 134 SO
Myers continued his second-half turnaround with a dominating win over the Cubs on Saturday afternoon. Against the best offense in the National League, Myers tossed seven-plus innings of two-run ball. He gave up 11 hits (all singles), walked none and struck out eight. At one point, the right-hander retired 11 hitters in a row. Myers is 5-1 with a 1.78 ERA since the All-Star break. Only two other pitchers, both acquired in July trades, boast better ERAs during the second half. The Brewers' C.C. Sabathia (6-0, 1.41) and the Cubs' Rich Harden (4-1, 1.66) have received widespread attention for helping their teams in the playoff push.

They had beaten the Brewers. The Mets, though, were not beating their chests. Last season taught them well. Not that they don't know what they've accomplished to date or are unaware of what lies directly ahead -- more pennant race, more Phillies for sure; more gnashing of teeth probably.

Mets probable pitcher

Mike Pelfrey

  • #34 RHP
  • (13-8) 3.66 ERA 97 SO
Pelfrey's bid for a third consecutive complete game fell 2 1/3 innings short last Saturday in Miami, as did his bid for a fourth straight win. But the Mets certainly had no qualms with the way Pelfrey pitched. The two runs he allowed would have been enough to win on many other nights, and his inefficiency -- 99 pitches through six innings, and 116 through 6 2/3 -- was an aberration in the context of the month. Pelfrey completed August with a 4-1 record and 2.93 ERA, and will commence September against the Phillies, whom he has beaten once in two attempts.

Phils take Round 1 of Shea Showdown (77-64) (79-62)

Phillies 3, Mets 0

Myers fans 10

The Phils manufactured a run in the first on a single, a steal, an error and a groundout. That bit of small ball would be all they needed as Brett Myers stifled the Mets, allowing just three hits and fanning 10. The win pulls Philadelphia a game closer to New York in the National League East.

Bats silenced

The Mets saw their lead in the National League East shrink by a game after Brian Schneider's throwing error in the first gave the Phillies a lead they'd never relinquish. Mike Pelfrey was solid, allowing just two earned runs on four hits, but Philadelphia's Brett Myers was better on this night.
