Marshall keeps hoping for rotation spot

Sean Marshall will make his sixth start of the season on Sunday in place of the injured Carlos Zambrano. He is hoping it is an audition to stay in the regular rotation, though he is more than happy just to contribute to the Cubs' success.

Marshall will sub for Carlos Zambrano, who had to come out of his last start Tuesday because of discomfort in his arm. This will be Marshall's sixth start of the season. His last start was Aug. 31 against the Phillies when he gave up five runs on nine hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings.

Harang can only pick up the pieces

Mid-season injuries have hampered Aaron Harang's once-promising season, and the Reds right-hander knows all he can do is finish out strong and try to make the best of the starts he has left.

Aaron Harang

  • #39 RHP
  • (4-15) 5.24 ERA 132 SO
Harang gave up three earned runs and five hits, including two home runs, over six innings with two walks and four strikeouts and came out a 3-2 loser to the Pirates on Tuesday. The back-to-back homers in the second inning didn't hurt as much as a third-inning leadoff walk to pitcher Ian Snell, who wound up scoring the go-ahead run. Although he is 1-4 with a 7.52 ERA in five starts since returning from a forearm injury that put him on the disabled list, Harang has a 2.84 ERA over his last three starts -- all quality outings.

Reds douse Cubs' hopes (86-57) (64-79)

Reds 4, Cubs 3

Don't knock on Wood

The Cubs' offense was stifled by Aaron Harang's gem until the seventh -- when two hit batters came around to score on an RBI double by Ronny Cedeno and a sac fly from Mike Fontenot. However, those runs and Sean Marshall's gem weren't enough, as Kerry Wood allowed three runs in the ninth for a blown save and Cubs loss.

Wild afternoon

Chris Dickerson drilled a hot shot that plated two runs, and Jolbert Cabrera -- less than 24 hours removed from his first career grand slam -- collected an RBI single to propel the Reds to a walk-off win over the Cubs. Aaron Harang plunked two batters and allowed two runs in the seventh, but his wildness was forgiven in victory.
