Cubs' rotation appears back on track

Given the way things have shaped up for the Cubs lately, fans might not imagine the rotation is set for the next few weeks. They would be wrong, however, as Lou Piniella has his hurlers set until season's end -- beginning with Ryan Dempster in St. Louis on Tuesday.

Cubs probable pitcher

Ryan Dempster

  • #46 RHP
  • (15-6) 2.99 ERA 167 SO
In his next start, Dempster will be vying for his career-high 16th win once again. The right-hander suffered a rare loss at home in his last start, against Houston. He gave up three runs on eight hits in seven innings, but the Cubs' offense continued to sputter. Since the All-Star break, Dempster is 5-2 with a 2.44 ERA.

Series vs. Cubs bigger than rivalry

The upcoming series against the Cubs is a big one for the Cardinals, but not just because it's against their longtime rivals.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Kyle Lohse

  • #26 RHP
  • (13-6) 3.76 ERA 106 SO
Ever wonder why statheads say wins don't matter? Take a look at Lohse's past four starts. He's pitched 26 innings, allowing eight runs for a 2.77 ERA. He's struck out 18 against eight walks, and given up exactly one home run. To top it off, three of those four starts have come in three of the most hitter-friendly parks in baseball, in Cincinnati, Houston and Phoenix. And yet he's 0-1 in those games. Can somebody please buy this guy a break?

Lou challenges Cubs

Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez got the offense rolling early with RBI doubles in the first, and Ryan Dempster limited the Cards to three runs over seven frames. But when the Cubs lost in the ninth, manager Lou Piniella had seen enough.

Rally snares opener

Albert Pujols remained on fire at the plate, crushing his 33rd homer -- a game-tying three-run shot in the sixth inning. His long ball and 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief set up Cesar Izturis' walk-off fielder's choice in the ninth.
