It wasn't the spot in the lineup Russell Martin expected to fill, but the Dodgers are 8-2 with their catcher leading off the game, so it figures to continue awhile.

Dodgers probable pitcher

Derek Lowe

  • RHP
  • (12-11) 3.53 ERA 132 SO
In his last two starts, Lowe has defeated Arizona's Brandon Webb and Dan Haren. He's on the best roll of the season, going 3-1 in his last five starts with a 1.02 ERA, not to mention 19 consecutive scoreless innings. He's the only pitcher in the Major Leagues with at least 12 victories in each of the last seven years and he leads the club in innings pitched. His spot in the rotation was juggled to make sure he would start in San Diego and not in Colorado.

Entering Tuesday's game, the Padres' bullpen had a 1.99 ERA in its previous seven games in September, covering 22 2/3 innings.

Padres probable pitcher

Shawn Estes

  • LHP
  • (2-1) 2.97 ERA 15 SO
Estes, back from a fractured thumb, impressed in his first start in more than three months his last time out. The veteran lefty held Milwaukee to one run in six innings, scattering seven hits for the win. Estes got a lot of help from third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and only struck out one, but the outing was a step in the right direction for a guy who's trying to showcase his stuff to get a contract for next season. Estes hasn't faced the Dodgers since 2005.

Dodgers pad lead

A pair of Manny Ramirez home runs and 5 1/3 sharp innings by Derek Lowe allowed the Dodgers to extend their NL West lead over the D-backs to a comfortable 3 1/2 games. Only a premature exit by Lowe in the sixth after he was struck by a comebacker mitigated the win.

Estes hit hard

It appeared the Padres would get the best of Dodgers starter Derek Lowe after putting up a first-inning run, but the offense mustered little else. Starter Shawn Estes wasn't terrible, but was ultimately felled by a pair of taters and an inability to get the big out when he needed it most.
