Braves set for doubleheader at Shea

Mike Hampton will get his shot at Johan Santana. It'll just come many hours later. Friday's scheduled lefty duel was delayed until Saturday at 3:55 p.m. ET because of a rainout, which also pushed southpaw Jo-Jo Reyes' start back to the second game against Mets rookie left-hander Jon Niese.

Braves probable pitcher

Mike Hampton

  • #32 LHP
  • (2-2) 5.60 ERA 24 SO
Braves: Hampton surrendered a career-high four homers while getting a no-decision with a seven-inning effort against the Nationals on Saturday. The sinkerball specialist has been frustrated by the number of pitches he's been leaving up in the zone recently. While he's still showing some rust, the lefty has also steadily proven that he can still be effective at the Major League level. With injury questions still looming, Hampton needs to pitch well over the final weeks to increase the interest he'll gain on the free-agent market this winter.

Mets to play makeup doubleheader

Pitching coach Dan Warthen uses playful pseudonyms for the Mets' starting pitchers. The altered identities he listed Friday were Ferarri Santana, Maserati Martinez, Packard Perez, Aston Martin Pelfrey and, for the fifth starter, "Ford or Chevy." Ferrari will pitch the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Mets probable pitcher

Johan Santana

  • #57 LHP
  • (13-7) 2.70 ERA 175 SO
Mets: Santana stopped the bleeding for the Mets Sunday, holding the Phillies to two runs in 7 1/3 innings following his club's two straight losses to its division rival. He allowed five hits -- one a home run -- striking out six and walking three. Most importantly, the 29-year-old once again extended his arm past 100 pitches, a workload he has surpassed in nine out of his last 10 starts, throwing 71 of his 116 pitches for strikes. While Santana has fared well against the Braves in most statistical categories, holding this National League East opponent to four earned runs in 14 innings, both starts have resulted in tough-luck losses and only four Braves have been struck out by Santana in 2008.

Francoeur does job

After Mike Hampton battled Johan Santana in a gutsy performance the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Jeff Francoeur tied the game with a bases-loaded single in the eighth inning, and Omar Infante put the Braves on top with a sacrifice fly. Mike Gonzalez closed out the game to earn his 10th save.

Mets lose matinee

Johan Santana didn't have his best stuff in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, but he held the Braves scoreless for seven innings. But after he gave up two hits to open the eighth and exited, Atlanta rallied for three runs. The loss, coupled with the Phillies' win, cut the Mets' NL East lead to two games.
