Braves set for doubleheader at Shea

Mike Hampton will get his shot at Johan Santana. It'll just come many hours later. Friday's scheduled lefty duel was delayed until Saturday at 3:55 p.m. ET because of a rainout, which also pushed southpaw Jo-Jo Reyes' start back to the second game against Mets rookie left-hander Jon Niese.

Braves: On Sunday afternoon, Reyes was in line to earn his first win since June 13 before his bullpen imploded. Still, while limiting the Nationals to one run in six innings, the 23-year-old southpaw provided some reason for optimism. Reyes, who is 0-6 with a 6.90 ERA over his past 10 appearances (nine starts), limited the Mets to two earned runs and four hits in six innings while getting a no-decision at Shea Stadium on Aug. 19.

Mets to play makeup doubleheader

Pitching coach Dan Warthen uses playful pseudonyms for the Mets' starting pitchers. The altered identities he listed Friday were Ferarri Santana, Maserati Martinez, Packard Perez, Aston Martin Pelfrey and, for the fifth starter, "Ford or Chevy." Ferrari will pitch the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Mets probable pitcher

Jonathon Niese

  • #49 LHP
  • (0-0) 15.00 ERA 2 SO
Mets: Niese got knocked around by the Brewers in his Major League debut on Sept. 3, allowing seven hits, four walks and five runs over three-plus innings. Niese said anxiety undermined him in the first inning. He surrendered a home run to Rickie Weeks on his second big league pitch and walked the next two batters. Nine of his first 13 pitches were balls.

Niese and easy: Mets roll in Game 2 (65-83) (83-63)

Mets 5, Braves 0

Reyes exits early

Starter Jo-Jo Reyes gave up a two-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the second, then left for a pinch-hitter. The Braves' bullpen validated Bobby Cox's move with a string of solid performances, but their offense never got anything going against rookie Jonathon Niese.

Wright lifts Niese

Jonathon Niese's second big league start went much smoother than his first. The rookie relaxed after David Wright and Jose Reyes homered to give him a four-run lead early, cruising through eight innings against the Braves to earn his first win in his first start at Shea Stadium.
