Prince Fielder insisted Friday that he had not been stressing about his long home run drought, which ended Thursday night after a 93 at-bat homerless streak that spanned parts of 26 games. Fielder, who belted 50 home runs last season to become the youngest player in Major League history to reach that plateau, has hit them in bunches in 2008.

Brewers probable pitcher

Manny Parra

  • #43 LHP
  • (10-7) 4.03 ERA 138 SO
Brewers: Parra gave up six runs in five innings on Sunday, though five of those were unearned after a pair of infield gaffes led to a big inning against the Padres. Parra would have had to seriously deal to keep up with opposing starter Chris Young, who lost a perfect game with four outs to go, but it was another in a growing series of short starts. Parra has one victory in his past six decisions and has worked beyond the sixth just once since July 20.

The Phillies entered this weekend's crucial series with the Brewers needing some energy. Ryan Howard didn't make them wait long. The first baseman blasted a two-run homer in the first inning on Thursday, giving the Phils a lead they would not relinquish in Round 1 of their battle with the Brewers for control of the National League Wild Card.

Phillies probable pitcher

Cole Hamels

  • #35 LHP
  • (12-9) 3.12 ERA 180 SO
Phillies: Hamels arrived in New York last weekend on the heels of a 17-start stretch in which he had posted a 2.53 ERA. But he allowed the Mets three runs in the first inning and labored the rest of the way, needing 110 pitches to get through five innings. Still, it was only the third time since June 28 that Hamels has allowed four earned runs in a start. In four career starts against the Brewers, Hamels is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA.

Phillies make Wild move (83-65) (81-67)

Phillies 7, Brewers 3

Brewers' lead trimmed

Starter Manny Parra's recent struggles continued against the Phillies, as he gave up five runs and seven hits over just 1 1/3 innings. Meanwhile, the Brewers' hitters were held in check by Cole Hamels and saw their Wild Card lead over the Phillies lowered to two.

Phils gaining ground

With Jimmy Rollins (3-for-5, two-run homer, three runs) serving as the catalyst and Cole Hamels (6 1/3 innings, two runs) cruising, the Phils cut the Brewers' Wild Card lead to two. In the NL East, the Phils are 2 1/2 games back of the Mets, who split a twin bill.
