NY Mets (83-66) at Washington (57-93)

Though the Mets' opener against the Nationals on Monday didn't go well, a bright spot was young right-hander Bobby Parnell, whose impressive debut may lead to more opportunities to help out a beleaguered relief corps.

Mets probable pitcher

Mike Pelfrey

  • #34 RHP
  • (13-9) 3.77 ERA 101 SO
Mets: Pelfrey was credited with a no-decision during the Mets' high-scoring affair with the Nationals on Wednesday, surrendering five runs on eight hits in five innings. Although the duration was less than average -- he hadn't been pulled before the sixth frame since a 4 2/3-inning outing against the Marlins on Aug. 10 -- Pelfrey still threw 96 pitches (56 strikes). His control was streaky, though, especially with Elijah Dukes in the batter's box. Dukes homered in the second inning and was nearly hit in the fourth, causing Dukes to yell at Pelfrey. Dukes was hit by Pelfrey in the fifth, but took first base without incident. Pelfrey will face the Nationals for the fourth time this season in this start, having compiled a 1-1 record against them, with a 2.75 ERA.

The center-field position has been a constant learning experience for Lastings Milledge, but the 23-year-old rising star is willing to put in the work to get better.

Nationals probable pitcher

Odalis Perez

  • #45 LHP
  • (6-10) 4.48 ERA 97 SO
Nationals: Perez's worst outing of the season came on Wednesday against the Mets, when he gave up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in just three innings of work. The six earned runs tied a season high -- which he has set two other times this year -- and over his past seven starts, the 30-year-old has given up 22 runs in 36 2/3 innings (a 5.40 ERA).

National Tatistrophe: Mets in second (83-67) (58-93)

Nationals 1, Mets 0

Stunned silence

The Mets lost Fernando Tatis to a separated shoulder -- and first place in the NL East -- as they were four-hit by Odalis Perez and the Nats' bullpen, wasting a strong seven-inning effort from Mike Pelfrey. They now lead the Wild Card race.

Oh wow!-lis

Odalis Perez faced the Mets for the fifth time and had his best start of the season, allowing four hits and striking out six in 7 1/3 innings. He also scored the lone run, on a ground-rule double by Cristian Guzman in the fifth inning.
