White Sox go with Richard vs. Yankees

The news was as closely guarded as the selection of a new Pope. But there was no white smoke that came from Ozzie Guillen's office when Clayton Richard was selected as Wednesday's starting pitcher against the Yankees following Tuesday's 6-2 victory at Yankee Stadium.

White Sox: It's hard to pass up a player with the last name of Broadway to start in New York, but Ozzie Guillen and his coaching staff opted for Richard in Wednesday night's contest. Richard has never faced the Yankees previously, although he did pitch in the Futures Game during All-Star Festivities this year at Yankee Stadium. The southpaw was called upon to neutralize the powerful left-handed bats in the Yankees lineup, with New York featuring a 21-22 record against southpaws in 2008.

Hughes makes return to Yankees

High expectations accompanied right-hander Phil Hughes as he entered the 2008 season. After he posted a 3-0 record with a 2.73 ERA last September, Yankees fans, management and Hughes himself all held the pitcher to a tall standard.

Yankees: Hughes is likely to get the call on Wednesday as the Yankees play the third of four games with the White Sox. The right-hander was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday after helping to pitch his club to an International League championship, going 1-0 with an 0.69 ERA in postseason play. Hughes has not pitched in the big leagues since April 29 in Detroit, where he suffered a stress fracture in his ninth rib on the right side. He started against the White Sox on April 24 in Chicago but left after two innings due to rain.

Richard does his part

Clayton Richard performed well on the big stage in a huge spot for the White Sox on Wednesday night, holding the tough Yankees offense at bay for most of the game, but the young lefty didn't get much support from the offense and took the loss.

Offense comes alive

The Yankees were handcuffed for most of the night, but they woke up in the seventh, when Xavier Nady tied the game with an RBI single and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Johnny Damon and Alex Rodriguez each went deep in the eighth.
