St. Louis keeping eye on prize

With the Cards' odds of entering the postseason becoming longer, they enter a three-game set against the Cubs with one goal in mind: winning.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Adam Wainwright

  • #50 RHP
  • (9-3) 3.20 ERA 84 SO
Coming off a shockingly subpar performance, Wainwright is hungry to redeem himself in what is sure to be a charged atmosphere at Wrigley Field. Wainwright just didn't feel strong on Saturday night in Pittsburgh and was clearly affected by the muggy conditions. Facing the Cubs won't be an easy task for him, and he's never beaten them, but never bet against Wainwright when he has extra motivation.

Zambrano's encore could help clinch

What can Carlos Zambrano do for an encore? Zambrano will make his first start since throwing a no-hitter when he kicks off the Cubs' final regular-season series against the Cardinals on Friday. A win over St. Louis, coupled with a loss by the Brewers, would give the Cubs their second straight division title.

Cubs probable pitcher

Carlos Zambrano

  • #38 RHP
  • (14-5) 3.41 ERA 127 SO
What did Zambrano do in his last start? Oh yeah, he threw a no-hitter against the Astros. In Milwaukee. After missing a turn in the rotation with rotator cuff tendinitis. Zambrano struck out 10, walked one and hit a batter en route to the first Cubs no-hitter in 36 years. Before that, he had gone more than six innings once since Aug. 1 and had to undergo an MRI to determine what was wrong. Well, problem fixed. In two starts against St. Louis this year, he's 1-1 with a 7.84 ERA. Zambrano is trying to become the third Cubs starter to reach 15 wins this season. Ryan Dempster has 16, and Ted Lilly has 15.

Kennedy slams Cubs

After requesting a trade earlier, Adam Kennedy smashed a grand slam in the first, then an RBI single in the second, as the Cardinals knocked out Carlos Zambrano and built an eight-run lead. The beneficiary of the outburst was Adam Wainwright, who cruised to his 10th win.

No no-no

Carlos Zambrano wasn't sharp, allowing the first four batters to reach before giving up a grand slam, and was lifted after 1 2/3, leaving the Cubs in a hole they never managed to climb out of. Despite the loss, Chicago's magic number moved to one after the Brewers lost later on Friday.
