History awaits Waters in Stadium finale

Like it or not, Chris Waters will become the answer to a trivia question on Sunday night. The unassuming southpaw starter will become one of two pitchers to start the final game at venerable Yankee Stadium, an opportunity sure to grant him a national stage and a small but realistic chance to etch his name into the sport's record books forever.

Orioles Against the Blue Jays in his last start, Waters spun the best outing of his young career. The 28-year-old rookie allowed just four hits in his first shutout. With the help of his strong sinker, accompanied with a side-arm delivery that he occasionally mixed in to surprise Toronto's hitters, the left-hander did not allow a runner to reach second base until the eighth inning. Waters also did not face more than four batters in any one inning. By the end of the game, his season ERA plummeted almost a full run, from 5.73 to 4.75.

Entrusted with the awesome responsibility of making sure Yankee Stadium closes the way it opened, with a Yankees victory, Andy Pettitte will throw the first pitches of the final game to be played under these lights in the Bronx.

Yankees: In his final tuneup before he takes the mound for the last game at Yankee Stadium, Pettitte picked up a career-high fifth straight loss Tuesday against the White Sox. One inning spoiled the outing as he gave up three runs in the fourth and four earned runs total, striking out four. He recorded three walks, one intentional, through his six innings, and one forced in a run as the bases were loaded. Pettitte will look for just his second win since July 31 on Sunday. Lights dim in Bronx

Opened in 1923, Yankee Stadium closed its doors after a lifetime of memories with one final win, which was delivered in part by starter Andy Pettitte and closer Mariano Rivera, who pitched the ninth. A moving pregame ceremony honored the contributions of legions of legends.
