Murphy a 'natural' in Mets' lineup

In a short few months, Daniel Murphy has risen from a middling prospect to a promising young outfielder whom manager Jerry Manuel is comparing to some of the game's great all-time "natural" talents.

Mets probable pitcher

Mike Pelfrey

  • #34 RHP
  • (13-10) 3.67 ERA 105 SO
A double that might have been caught and a four-pitch walk that followed an extended interruption in play were Pelfrey's undoing Tuesday night against the Nationals. Cristian Guzman followed the walk with a booming double to drive in the run in a 1-0 loss. Pelfrey wasn't sharp -- seven hits and four walks in seven innings, but aside from Guzman's hit, he limited the damage. Now he faces the team that has knocked him around a few times this season. He has a 1-2 record and 6.87 ERA in three starts against the Braves. But the losses occurred in April, and he pitched a three-hitter, the first complete game of his career, against them Aug. 20 at Shea Stadium.

Final home game has Braves nostalgic

Playing at Turner Field hasn't always been a pleasant experience for the Braves this season, but it's been an even worse experience for the Mets, who have lost all but one game at the Ted this year. In their final 2008 home game, the Braves hope they can continue the Mets' woes in Atlanta for one more day.

Braves probable pitcher

James Parr

  • #61 RHP
  • (1-0) 2.20 ERA 12 SO
Despite allowing four earned runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Phillies on Tuesday, James Parr still drew some postgame praise from manager Bobby Cox, who has been impressed by the rookie hurler's makeup and ability to mix his pitches. The 22-year-old right-hander had tossed six scoreless innings in both of his two previous career starts this month. While enjoying a successful August with Triple-A Richmond and finding some early success at the Major League level, Parr has at least made himself a candidate for Atlanta's 2009 starting rotation.

Big eighth a boon for Braves (86-69) (69-87)

Braves 7, Mets 6

Tough day for 'pen

For most of the day, the Mets led the Braves thanks to Carlos Delgado's 2,000th career hit, David Wright's 32nd homer of the year and six-plus solid innings from Mike Pelfrey. But the bullpen couldn't hold off the Braves, who rallied to hand the Mets a loss and cut New York's lead in the NL Wild Card race to 1 1/2 games.

Braves rally late

Jeff Francoeur's one-out triple highlighted a four-run eighth inning that allowed the Braves to celebrate their home finale with a win. The win seemed unlikely after rookie starter James Parr struggled through 1 2/3 innings, but the bullpen held the Mets in check and gave the Braves the chance to stage their rally.
